Can I take out a personal loan at the age of 20?

Susana M asked:

I am 20 years old and my parents are kicking me out. I need money for a car and for rent. Can I take out a personal loan even though i have no credit? I haven’t ever owned anything of my own; therefore, i have no credit. Please help!

This forum is about college financial aid, not personal loans.

Your first step is to get a job, not a loan.

You are over 18 and so in the USA you are legally able to be bound by contract law. Getting a loan is difficult with no credit history, but it is not impossible - what you would need to show is ability to pay the loan back. I.E. you would need a job, collateral (something of value that could be used as an exchange if you don’t pay) or a co-signer. Don’t expect lots of money at first, but the better you show you pay your debts, the better you become as a credit risk.

With a car loan, usually the car is your collateral - the lender keeps the title and you keep the car insured and when you pay it off you get the title. If you don’t pay it off, they can reposess the car and sell it to someone else to get their money back (they can still go after you though in the meantime).

Talk with banks, let them know your situation and see what type of loan you can get and how much. If you are a student, you can get student loans or other loans somewhat easier while in school.

    good luck.

Dude. Get a job and make your own damn money.

Remember, loans have to be paid off and have interest attatched to them! Meaning the longer it takes to pay off your loan, the bigger the amount is which leads to debt.
